On Sunday, May 12, we’ll begin Stage 2 of construction on the Victoria Street West Improvements Project. Stage 1 work will continue and overlap with Stage 2 work until approximately the end of July 2019.

“Stage 2 will encompass the Victoria Street West corridor from Seymour Street West near the BCLC upper parking lot entrance to just west of Boomers Automotive near the Overlanders Bridge,” said Darren Crundwell, the City’s Capital Projects Manager. “Construction will be restricted to the south side of the road, with traffic travelling on the north side of the road in two lanes—one in each direction.”

Starting the evening of May 12, our crews will be removing asphalt from the south side of the road throughout the Stage 2 construction zone.

Victoria Street West Improvements Project

The traffic light at the south end of the Overlanders Bridge on Victoria Street West will be deactivated to help with traffic flow and efficiency through the construction zone allowing motorists travelling down Summit Drive or coming from Mission Flats heading to the North Shore to move freely onto the bridge. Motorists travelling west on Victoria Street West and heading to the North Shore will also be able to move freely onto the bridge.

Stage 1 construction is taking place between 1st Avenue and the centre island at Seymour Street West/Victoria Street West. Current Stage 1 traffic flow patterns will remain in place, and transit and emergency services vehicles will continue to receive priority routing around the Stage 1 construction zone.

In the Stage 1 construction zone, our crews are continuing sanitary and water main work, Silva Cell installations (modular building blocks that allow trees and soil to manage stormwater on site), and duct bank installations for services and hydro.

All businesses along the Victoria Street West corridor are open and accessible, including those located within Stage 1 below BCLC and those situated on both sides of the road within Stage 2.

Please be courteous and allow motorists exiting from businesses, parkades, and on-street parking stalls to merge into traffic. Motorists are reminded of the posted 30 km/h speed limit throughout the construction zone and are asked to use caution and courtesy when driving in the area and utilize proper zipper merging etiquette. Please obey all traffic control devices and personnel.
